It's similar to interval training in that you have an intensive period of workout followed by a lesser or more relaxed period. It involves running a set distance at a set pace e.g. short sprints followed by a jog. You can also adjust the terrain i.e. hill runs
I think Fartlek training is considered as a way of replicating the physical demands of a game

Correct, you often see runners, including myself doing this kind of training over jobbing as it is sports specific. Often using lamp posts as markers, so brisk walk between first set of lamp posts, jog second set, max sprint third set, jog fourth set, brisk walk fifth set, jo sixth set etc etc etc.
If done right its a killer.
