| Most on here reckon that a team full of Leythers is the way forward!
I think that we have taken a leaf out of the mighty Batleys book and from what they did to us last season, i have said that i don't think that some leigh lads are good enough and just cos they are from Leigh etc etc However as we have signed established players we will have a team next season who plays 100% for us the fans and that can only be good for us!!

second rower Sam Hopkins comes from Tyldesley, he as played for a Leigh team from being seven years old would that make him a leither.

I think it's a nice to have... a great case for why Leigh can be in Super League compared to a Crusaders, Harlequins et al packed full of Aussies.
Does it work? Does a player from the Leigh area try extra hard playing for Leigh? I don't think so. It's more about who pays the wages. Think of off all the players from the Leigh area who have never played for Leigh or went onto other clubs.
For me the sooner they forget about this ideology and get players in on merit, not because they come from Leigh the better.

I agree that not every player will 'try harder' just because they are from Leigh but I imagine that some of them do. But I think it is more likely to have a positive effect on the team than the individual players. If there is a large core of local players it must help the team to gel easier and get more of a team spirit in the club which will then be picked up on and hopefully bought into by players from further afield. But they do have to be in the team for their ability and not because they are from Leigh. |
